What is orthodontics and why is it important?
Who needs orthodontic treatment?
- Children, starting as young as 7 years old, can benefit from interceptive treatments.
- Adolescents, for correcting the position of teeth after complete eruption.
- Adults who want aesthetic or functional bite correction – orthodontics has no age limit!
Types of dental braces
Fixed orthodontic appliance - metal
It is the most commonly used type of orthodontic appliance, consisting of metal brackets bonded to the front of permanent teeth with a special adhesive. The brackets are connected by a metal spring that exerts pressure on the teeth to move them into the correct position.
Benefits: efficient, most affordable
Disadvantages: visible, may cause initial discomfort
Fixed orthodontic appliance - ceramic
This type of braces works similarly to metal braces, but uses ceramic brackets in a shade close to the natural color of the teeth. It is preferred by patients who want discreet orthodontic treatment without compromising effectiveness.
Benefits: superior aesthetics, less visible
Disadvantages: higher cost, brackets can be more fragile

Removable orthodontic appliance
Removable orthodontic appliances are custom-made devices that can be easily applied and removed by the patient. They are especially recommended for children and adolescents during the growing period, when the position of the teeth can be progressively corrected.
These appliances are less invasive and help guide jaw development, correct bad habits, or maintain results after fixed orthodontic treatments.
Benefits: increased comfort, easy to maintain, adapted to growing age
Disadvantages: reduced effectiveness if not worn as directed

Lingual orthodontic appliance
Lingual braces are a type of fixed appliance that is mounted on the inner surface of the teeth (towards the tongue), being completely invisible during speech or smiling. They are a premium option, ideal for patients who want discreet correction of dental alignment without aesthetic compromises.
The treatment requires careful planning and a longer adaptation period, but offers excellent results with minimal visual impact.
Benefits: completely invisible, results comparable to classic fixed appliances
Disadvantages: more expensive, may require more time to adapt

Transparent gutters (alignments)
Aligners are a modern, invisible and removable orthodontic solution, ideal for patients who want discreet treatment without brackets or metal wires. These personalized aligners are made of a transparent, comfortable material and are applied directly to the teeth to gradually correct their position.
They are especially recommended for adults or teenagers with an active lifestyle, who want impeccable aesthetics during treatment.
Benefits: invisible, comfortable, no major dietary restrictions
Disadvantages: effectiveness dependent on constant wear (minimum 22 hours/day)
For optimal results, aligners should be worn daily, being removed only during meals and oral hygiene.

Why go to the orthodontist?
Because proper orthodontic treatment gives you aesthetically aligned teeth, a balanced bite, more efficient mastication, reduces the risk of cavities and periodontal diseases, prevents premature tooth wear and, last but not least, increases your self-confidence.
Orthodontics is not just about aesthetics, but about health, functionality and comfort. Choosing the right type of braces should be done together with the orthodontist, depending on the clinical needs, lifestyle and budget of each patient. Frequently asked questions about orthodontics
It is recommended that the first orthodontic consultation take place around the age of 7. During this period, the child generally has a combination of baby teeth and permanent teeth, and the orthodontist can assess the development of the jaws and teeth and identify any orthodontic problems at an early stage.
Este important să consulți un specialist în ortodonție pentru o evaluare profesională și pentru a obține un diagnostic timpuriu si precis, dar iată câteva semne comune care pot indica nevoia de tratament ortodontic:
1. Crooked, crowded teeth or if there are large spaces between the teeth.
2. Delayed eruption of permanent teeth or persistence of milk teeth.
3. Incorrect bite such as excessive overlap of the lower teeth by the upper ones (deep-bite), an open bite (open-bite), the position of the mandible located more posteriorly or anteriorly in relation to the jaw.
4. Reverse bite caused by a narrow jaw.
5. Mouth breathing.
6. Problems swallowing, chewing and incorrect position of the tongue.
7. Jaw deformities caused by interposing an object or the lower or upper lip between the teeth and thumb sucking.
Yes, braces can be applied to adults as well. There is no upper age limit for orthodontic treatment. Regardless of age, you can consider braces if you want to correct orthodontic problems, such as an unsightly smile, crowded teeth, or an incorrect bite.
The duration of orthodontic treatment can vary considerably, depending on several factors: the complexity of the case, the type of orthodontic appliance used, the patient's age and their cooperation. In general, the average duration is between 1.5 -2.5 years.
Orthodontic treatment may cause a slight sensation of discomfort or pressure immediately after application and during periodic adjustments of the orthodontic appliance. This discomfort ranges from mild to moderate and may last for several days after each adjustment (activation).
Using orthodontic wax or oral discomfort relief products recommended by your orthodontist may help relieve symptoms.
It is also recommended to avoid foods of a harder consistency while tooth sensitivity persists.
Wearing braces does not in itself cause tooth decay. However, wearing braces can make proper oral hygiene more difficult and can create a favorable environment for plaque buildup, cavities, or gum inflammation if appropriate measures are not taken.
It is essential to pay special attention to oral hygiene when wearing braces and to follow the instructions of your orthodontist.
When wearing braces, proper oral hygiene is crucial for maintaining dental health and preventing dental problems such as cavities and gum disease. Here are some tips for maintaining proper hygiene when wearing braces:
- Regular Tooth Brushing: Brushing your teeth should be done at least twice a day, using a medium-bristled toothbrush. Make sure to brush each tooth thoroughly, including the area around your braces and brackets. Try to brush around and along the archwires, using gentle, circular motions. It is important to pay special attention to cleaning the spaces between the brackets and under the archwire.
- Use cleaning aids: To reach hard-to-reach areas, you can use dental floss or interdental brushes. It is also recommended to use a mouth irrigator.
- Mouthwash: May help reduce bacteria and gum inflammation.
- Avoid hard and sticky foods: Certain foods, such as nuts, hard candies, or gum, can be difficult to remove from your braces. Try to avoid these foods and opt for soft, easy-to-chew foods during your orthodontic treatment.
- Regular visits to your orthodontist and dentist: Schedule regular check-ups and professional cleanings. These visits will help monitor the progress of your orthodontic treatment and get your teeth professionally cleaned.
1. Initial Consultation: At this stage, you will have an initial consultation with the orthodontist to assess your orthodontic needs and discuss treatment options. The orthodontist will assess the condition of your teeth, take a set of extra-oral and intra-oral photographs, x-rays, scans and/or impressions of your teeth to create a personalized treatment plan.
2. Treatment Planning: Based on the initial assessment, the orthodontist will create a personalized treatment plan. This involves establishing the ideal position of the teeth and determining the movements needed to reach that position.
3. Presenting the treatment plan and obtaining the patient's consent.
4. Tooth preparation: Before the fixed orthodontic appliance is applied, the orthodontist may recommend performing professional hygiene procedures, cleaning the teeth and treating existing cavities. Also, in some cases, it is necessary to extract some teeth to create sufficient space for the teeth to be fitted.
5. Applying the appliance: This step may involve cleaning and drying the teeth, applying an adhesive agent, and attaching the brackets to each tooth.
6. Adjustments and Regular Visits: During your orthodontic treatment, you will be scheduled for regular visits to your orthodontist, approximately every 4-6 weeks. During these visits, your orthodontist will make adjustments to your braces by changing the archwires, replacing the elastic bands, or making other changes as needed to continue moving your teeth in the correct direction.
7. Completion of treatment and application of retainers: After the orthodontist considers the orthodontic treatment to be complete, the fixed orthodontic appliance and adhesive from the teeth will be removed. Retainers will be applied to maintain the correct position of the teeth in the long term.
8. Regular check-ups: checking the stability of the retainers, the position of the teeth and checking the bite at intervals of 1, 3, 6 months.
There are two main types of retainers used in orthodontics: fixed retainers and removable retainers.

Retention is necessary for a fairly long period of time to allow stabilization and fixation of the correct position of the teeth.
This period can vary between 6 months and 2 years, depending on the orthodontist's recommendations and the individual characteristics of each patient. In some cases, for example in adults, the retainer is maintained for life.
It is important to strictly follow your orthodontist's recommendations regarding the use and maintenance of your retainers. It is also important to schedule regular visits to your orthodontist and dentist to monitor the results and maintain proper oral hygiene while wearing your retainers.
The mini orthodontic implant is a small device made of titanium or titanium alloy that is used during orthodontic treatment to provide additional anchorage when more complex orthodontic forces are required.
It is inserted into the alveolar bone, and the insertion procedure is painless and performed under local anesthesia.

Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, can be a warning sign and should be investigated and treated. Bruxism is a condition characterized by grinding or clenching of the teeth, especially during sleep.
Although the causes of bruxism are not fully known, possible triggers include an incorrect or unstable bite, stress, and anxiety. It can affect both children and adults.
Severe bruxism can lead to the following problems: excessive enamel wear, tooth mobility, facial pain and muscle tenderness, headaches, sleep problems, overuse of the temporomandibular joint causing noises when opening/closing the mouth and limiting mandibular movement.
If you have any symptoms associated with bruxism, it is recommended to consult a specialist for evaluation and appropriate treatment.
They are small elastic bands made of latex, used to correct the bite and intercuspation of the teeth.
The elastics attach to the brackets of the upper and lower teeth, respectively, and come in different sizes and degrees of strength.
