General information
Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the dental pulp (the nerve of the tooth) and the periapical tissues, located around the tooth root. Common causes of these diseases include deep cavities, dental trauma, and various aggressive dental procedures, such as excessive tooth grinding.
When bacterial infection extends beyond the root tip, it can affect the jawbone, leading to apical periodontitis. In such cases, a periapical granuloma (a collection of pus associated with localized bone destruction) may form.
An endodontic treatment performed according to the highest standards, with the help of a dental microscope, electronic endometer and rotating mechanical systems, can make the difference between preserving the tooth in the arch and the need for its extraction.
The stages of endodontic treatment are:
Evaluarea radiologică – analiza atentă a radiografiei pentru stabilirea unui diagnostic precis.
Local anesthesia – to ensure patient comfort during treatment.
Tooth isolation – a rubber dam is applied, followed by the creation of the access cavity to the pulp chamber and root canals.
Removal of altered tissues – all old filling materials, carious and infected tissues are removed until healthy dental tissues are reached.
Dental pulp extraction – the pulp is completely removed from the pulp chamber and root canals.
Measuring, widening and disinfecting canals – using modern technologies for effective cleaning.
Root canal filling – these are sealed tightly with biocompatible materials, thus preventing reinfection.
Tooth restoration after endodontic treatment
Given the significant loss of hard dental tissue, the endodontically treated tooth often requires reconstruction with a fiberglass post and dental crown prosthesis to restore its mechanical strength and prevent fracture.
Postoperatively
After completing the treatment, the patient may experience mild sensitivity or moderate pain, manageable by taking analgesics and anti-inflammatories, as recommended by the doctor.
